NX4832F035 – Nextion 3.5″ Discovery Series HMI Touch Display

I was making a bike computer to measure speed when my old screen broke. This screen was bright enough to see outside (although still difficult) and was really easy to program (although there isn't a milliseconds since start variable). If you are putting it in a fixture make sure to avoid crushing the backlight and touchscreen cables on the side, that's how my old Basic series one broke!

Display Upgrade Experience: Basic Series to Discovery Series

I'm replacing an old but reliable Basic Series display because the Nextion Editor no longer fully supports it. I opted for a one-to-one swap with the Discovery Series.

The transition was seamless except for serial communication speed issues. With the Basic Series, I ran flawlessly at 57,600 baud over a 500mm cable. However, after switching to the Discovery Series, I had to reduce the speed to 19,200 baud to achieve near-reliable communication.

The problem manifests when rendering multiple waveforms (graphs), where data packets are frequently dropped. Even at 19,200 baud, the connection isn’t 100% stable—a significant downgrade for my application. Since I rely heavily on real-time waveform displays, communication speed is critical. Unfortunately, this upgrade has traded a robust system for one that now feels sluggish and unreliable.

Even though this device does not have the bells & whistles of the Intelligent series (such as PNG transparency audio & video support, time chart, data table, etc.) is still excellent for many touch HMI graphic interface projects. The Enhanced series come in smaller sizes and all are very thin/slim with 4 holes making them easy to mount to any project box or panel.

The nice thing about these displays is that all the graphical image processing is done on the Nextion display itself. Your main processor (Arduino, etc.) then, only has to send and receive simple commands and variables via UART thus freeing precious processing and memory for your other processes. With a bit of graphics/image manipulation knowhow you can create beautiful animated multi-page HMIs for your project.

The graphical Nextion application makes it very easy to develop nice looking and useful interfaces. The displays work fine with any 3.3 or 5V UART... either with an inline resistor on each TX/RX line or a proper level shifter/isolator. The Arduino library simplifies your code... but it is still fairly simple to communicate with any of the Nextion displays directly. The programming language is a bit odd but not impossible once you get used to it. There are lots of custom functions, with very specific formatting and syntax. It would be nice to have more examples.

This display is a great price-point. I did not need the extra features of the top of the line displays. I used it to replace a slower display in a previous project....it worked great.

Purchased ten NX4832F035 – Nextion 3.5″ Discovery Series HMI Touch Display for a project using ESP32. I am very satisfied with using Nextion displays for many reasons, including ease of interface development, and freeing use of primary processors from display tasks. The Nextion Editor facilitates quick, easy interface development and debugging; just wish there was a function to print out the code. Previously used the Nextion Enhanced HMI display, with RTC, for a standalone Real Time Controller Systems that have been very successful. My 1st choice for HMI Touch Displays are the Nextion, for the reasons given earlier. My next projects are with the Nextion 5" HMI Touch Displays.

I bought NX4832F035. It works very well. I am using it for my new project. It would be good if there was some documentation in pdf, with some examples. I found some examples online and hope to be able to complete my project. The Nextion editor is also a good tool for development and debugging. I think I'll buy another one.

I use the 3,5" discovery display. It has all the features I need an saves money compard to the other displays. Shipment to the EU via GB is very convenient for the customer. I can pay customs at the post office.
