SONOFF ZBMINI-L Zigbee 3.0 Smart Switch – No Neutral Wire Required

The SONOFF ZBMINI-L has exceeded my expectations! It is easy to install and works perfectly with my Zigbee hub. I love it!

I have an older home with no neutral wire, so buying a smart switch that would work was a challenge. The ZBMINI-L was the perfect solution! It integrated seamlessly with my existing Zigbee devices and the ewelink app is user-friendly. I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and affordable smart switch.

Not so happy with my purchase. The item goes off by itself regulary and it also keeps disconnecting/disappearing from my ZHA network. I have two of these and both have the same behavior. Also troubles with a Itead Sonoff motion sensor SNZB-03 M01 that keeps falling of my Zigbee network. Besides these items I have 20+ items that work for over a year with no problems at all.

I have 8 pieces of the ZBMini-L bought and even updated the firmware after awhile. I use ioBroker with Zigbee Adapter and can connect via the SONOFF ZigBEE 3.0 USB Dongle Plus (newest beta firmware from Koenkk with fix for the ZBMini-L). No way. all 8 show the same problem that it works at the beginning, but after awhile they don't react anymore. like being in deep sleep. if the integrated button is used, it works randomly for awhile, but is not reliable at all.
I have no additionally switch connected. A 6 to 8W LED bulb was connected. 3 ZBMini-L have been connected on the same L(in). But even only 1 ZBMini-L has shown the same unreliablility. It is not usable like this.
Hopefully Stead has a good solution for this problem or exchange them with a working one. I wonder if the new ZB Mini extreme will have the same problems?

The ZBMINI-L is really too big which makes it impossible to place it inside the mounting boxes. This is a serious drawback as it makes many applications impossible. The device works very well but the size makes it uncompetitive.

Fitting the unit in the switches back box in the UK may be problematic if you have shallow ones fitted into the wall.
I overcome this by 3d printing spacers (having measured the switching top) to match the tops shape and included
through holes to accommodate and align the screws. You do have to purchase longer screws (50mm) but it gives you tons
of room to fit the unit into the back box and screw the switch top on neatly so it doesn't look out of place.

The mini-l certainly fits a purpose that many other products currently don't fill. Specifically, they allow automation of devices without a neutral wire and in that way, they work exactly as advertised. My only wish is that they would act as a repeater which is one of the benefits of a Zigbee system. Currently, I have some of the mini devices from Sonoff as well as some of their Zigbee plugs and incorporating a repeater into their mini-l would only strengthen my mesh system even more.

Otherwise, installation was simple and setup and connectivity are good using Zigbee2MQTT in Home Assistant. I am currently using the Sonoff Dongle as the controller.

When these work, they are excellent.

However, even with the firmware update, these devices will drop off my zigbee network (ZHA) intermittently. ZHA is configured perfectly because I have other zigbee products that are rock solid for months. When they do drop off, there is nothing you can do besides re-pairing them which requires opening up your light switches.

Even if a simpler pairing method was possible e.g. switch on and off 5 times in 5 seconds. My life would be so much easier. At this stage I cannot recommend them.
